Historical background
During the 16th century, the traditional lords of Livigno, the Grisons, established full economic and legislative autonomy in the Valley. Due to its strategic geographical location, Napoleon later granted Livigno exemption from excise duties in 1805. These privileges were reaffirmed in 1818 by Austria-Hungary and ratified by the Kingdom of Italy in 1910, with the EEC following in 1960. Livigno is not only renowned for its long ski slopes and pristine landscape, but thanks to its duty-free status also enjoys special tax breaks and fiscal privileges. A wide range of goods are available at highly advantageous prices: the price of fuel is almost 50% less as compared to elsewhere in Italy, while prices of cigarettes and tobacco, alcoholic beverages, perfumes, cameras and optical attachments, computer and electronic instruments, leather garments and fur are all significantly reduced.

Livigno Duty-free zone
Duty-free shopping and goods exempt from excise tax may be purchased in limited quantities, while there are set price limits for all other merchandise, above which the goods must be declared when departing from the territory of Livigno at the customs in Foscagno or at the Swiss border.
